Iran's Mines and Industries Minister said at opening ceremony of South Steel Plant in Bandar Abbas Monday country's steel production would increase to 15 million tons a year by (Iranian) year's end (March 21, 2009).

Ali Akbar Mehrabian who was speaking to Iranian technicians, engineers and managers of the South Steel Plant said that the country's current annual production of steel is 10 million metric tons, adding, "Taking advantage of the South Steel's annual capacity, Iran's steel production reached 10.3 million tons a year today." He then focused on ongoing activities for steel production in other parts of Hormozgan Province, reiterating, "This province would in near future become the pole of energy consuming industries, including steel plants."

Mehrabian added, "Simultaneous implementing of a number of steel production projects with total capacity exceeding six million tons at Persian Gulf Special Economic Region, that would soon reach production phase, is proof for that claim."

The Mines and Industries Minister predicted that Phase One of the Hormozgan Steel Plant Complex would reach production level with a 1.5 million ton annual production capacity.

He also referred to the Hormozal Aluminum Production Project, with annual 147,000 tons output, pointing out, "The investment made in at project is 800 million US dollars, based on finance method."

Arguing that the implementation pace of Hormozal Complex is satisfactory, Mehrabian expressed hope that some 114 vessels of that project would be put to use by the end of this (Iranian) year.

Also present at the opening ceremony of South Steel Plant at Bandar Abbas on Monday evening there were a representative of that city and one from Tehran Constituency at the Parliament, a member of Tehran City Council, Iran's Ambassador to India, representative of the Supreme Leader in Hormozgan Province and Friday Prayer leader of Bandar Abbas, Hormozgan Province Governor General, Iran's Head Consul to India, a representative from Kyrgyzstan and a number of provincial officials.
