Staff shortage hits SMC unit

The pre-mature births unit at the government-run Salmaniya Medical ComplexSalmaniya Medical ComplexLoading... is facing acute shortage of beds and staff.

Hospital officials are blaming private clinics for exerting pressure on young couples to undergo in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment which, they said, had led to an increase in pre-mature births.

SMCSMCLoading... Chief of Medical Staff, Dr. Adel Al Jishi, said, "There is an increase in the number of pre-mature births which our department is dealing. We have 25 beds for patients but are treating 45."

Dr Al Jishi said the department was receiving patients from all across the country. Some are referred to the Jidhafs Maternity Hospital and the Bahrain Defence Force Hospital.

"The BDF Hospital has its own limitations and the pressure comes on us."

The CMS said the pre-mature unit was equipped with trained staff to deal with cases but the sheer increase in the number of such births had affected the department.

According to Dr Al Jishi, pre-mature babies require special attention as they often suffer from several complications which could be fatal.

"Private clinics charge patients BD3,000-5000 and the mother ends up with complications," he said.

Dr Al Jishi said private clinics were putting pressure on young couples to go for the IVF treatment and cited a Bahraini woman who underwent the treatment six months after her marriage.

"I advise young couples to go through the natural phase and opt for such treatment only after two years of marriage."

Recently a Bahraini woman delivered pre-mature sextuplets. None survived.
