Societies condemn Iran decision

Bahrain Tribune

21 August 2008
Two political societies have condemned Iran's decision to open two administrative offices on the UAE island of Abu Mousa, saying that it consecrated the occupation of the UAE territory and called for a common Arab stance against the move.

The Nationalist Democratic Rally Society and the Islamic Nationalist Arab Movement said Tehran's decision was a dangerous provocation that would exacerbate tension in the volatile region and urged Iran to end its "drive to export its crises."

In a statement, the Islamic Nationalist Arab Movement claimed observers could notice the increase in the Iranian provocations to the countries in the region whenever Tehran wanted to export its domestic and international tensions and deflect attention from its confrontation with the West over the nuclear issue.

The Movement said all Arabian Gulf states were patient in their dealings with all the issues caused by Tehran and which were detrimental to the interests of the region.

The Movement said all Arab civil society organisations should "support the UAE stance on ending the Iranian occupation of its legitimate territory and its calls for open dialogue or arbitration at the International Court of Justice."

"The islands have been occupied for 37 years but the Arab states have been patient as they have been seeking a diplomatic solution. We are wary of further provocations against our Arab nation," the association said.

Tehran on Tuesday insisted that the International Court of Justice "had no jurisdiction" in the dispute.

Condemning Iran's decision as "fully compatible with the US plans to occupy the region", the society demanded that Tehran end its "provocative moves and confrontational rhetoric.

"We condemn the Iranian move on the island and its statements about Bahrain being part of Iran and the threats to close the Hormuz Strait, the vital waterway for the Arabian Gulf states," the society said.
