Sheikh Saud Salim Bahwan passes away

Times of Oman

21 August 2008
MUSCAT -- Leadership can be attained only through deep conviction and a passion for excellence, believed Sheikh Saud Salim Bahwan, 68, chairman of the Saud Bahwan Group who passed away at a hospital in Paris yesterday.

It is this motto of his that today makes the Saud Bahwan Group one of Oman's largest business houses, representing world class brands like Toyota, Daihatsu, Lexus, Ford, Yokohama, Kubota, Komatsu, Kato and MAN.

The mortal remains of Sheikh Saud will be brought to Oman this morning and prayers will be performed at the Abu Bakr Mosque, Wattayah. His body will be carried to Al Amerat graveyard and condolences will be accepted at the mosque.

In mourning, all the offices, divisions and branches of Saud Bahwan Group shall remain closed from August 20, and shall resume operations on Sunday August 24.

With annual sales of over US$3 billion and employing as many as 9,400 professionals, Sheikh Saud had managed to set standards in management excellence that are unparalleled.

A self-made man who began his career at the age of nine, Sheikh Saud built up a reputation for himself as a man with an uncanny sense for trade.

He entered the corporate world just over 30 years ago and it wasn't long before he dominated it with his dynamism and business acumen. His magic touch led to success stories over and over again in virtually every sphere of activity.

However, behind this astute businessman was a philanthropist who cared deeply for the less fortunate and one who made generous contributions to innumerable social causes and projects. He was known for his great compassion towards children with special needs, and orphans.

Some of his initiatives include construction and financing of activities for 28 centres for special children, establishment of Oman's first institute for the blind, provision of school uniforms, school bags and writing materials to over 100,000 children, funding the expansion of kidney dialysis services in Muscat and setting up air-conditioners and water-coolers in over 1,000 Omani schools, among many others. Under his guidance, construction is also underway for a state-of-the-art Cardiac and Diabetic Centre in Oman.

Sheikh Saud Bahwan is the recipient of numerous accolades and awards for his multifaceted contributions. Saud Bahwan Group was conferred the 'Best Arab Organisation' award by General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, crown prince of Dubai and UAE Defence Minister.

Sayyid Ali bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, minister of the Diwan of Royal Court, presented the 'Sultan Qaboos Order' to Sheikh Saud Salim Bahwan. Jiro Hagi, Japanese ambassador to Oman, presented 'The Order of the Rising Sun Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon' on Sheikh Saud. This is the highest civilian honour bestowed by Akihito, the emperor of Japan.

Sheikh Saud Bahwan is also the recipient of the Gulf Businessman of the Year award, the region's highest honour and the first for any businessman. He is also the only businessman in the AGCC to have been honoured with the prestigious 'Arab Labour Pioneer' Award.
