Kuwait: Price rises of up to 87%

KUWAIT: The Sulaibikhat and Doha Cooperative Society has prepared a report about price rises affecting 20 basic commodities. The step is part of the cooperative's efforts to monitor the alarming price increases which have affected the country in the past few months.

Dr Muttar Ali Al-Metairie, the Co-op's chairman, revealed that the price rises recorded in the report ranged between four and 87 percent. The commodities whose prices were monitored include rice, chicken, milk, cheese, jam and other products, with most of them being staple foodstuffs.

Al-Metairie indicated that the price of four of the 20 commodities had risen twice within the last few months, adding that this shows there are some greedy dealers behind the price increases who are using this period to make a lot of money for themselves, reported Al Watan.

Some dealers, he said, are anticipating increasing prices again, not caring what negative impact this has on poor expatriates or limited income families.
